Only two of my six assistants knew who he was! My thatha’s amma, who was in her late 80s, would ask me to narrate stories of the films that I watched in Hari Theatre. One of them said, ‘Sir, kochikatheenga, Jaishankar yaar sir?’. But I realised none of my ADs found it amusing. There was a ‘Jaishankar’ reference in a scene in Ayan, when Jagan talks to Suriya. I loved going to all his films in that period (1976-81). Jaishankar was my favourite hero back then. 16 Vayathinile and Thillana Mohanambal were also films I enjoyed watching at the tent kottai when I was in Class VII and Class IX respectively. I still remember enjoying Alibabavum 40 Thirudargalum, but I found some of the family dramas boring. So, say out of 10 days, I would watch three or four films. They used to change movies every two or three days. When I was in school, I used to visit my grandmother’s house in Pazhaverkadu once in three or four months because I loved watching movies at Hari tent kottai there. ![]()
